Don’t Bust Readers Guts – Create Snackable Content

In a world of ever-increasing attention spans, you don’t have the luxury of producing content that isn’t capable of snapping up reader’s interest immediately. In fact, it’s now estimated that our attention spans are shorter than that of a goldfish! The internet is an incredible tool, but it’s also perhaps the single most distracting technology we’ve invented since rubbing two sticks together to create fire. Understanding this principle is essential to capturing one of the rarest and most fleeting resources your business needs to survive – the ever elusive attention of a potential lead. It’s important for content creators and marketers to acknowledge this and use it to their benefit, and one of the best ways to do this today is through snackable content.

Snacking on Your Written Content

The idea of creating snackable content is simple – to create useful, valuable content that is interesting in segmented portions. Imagine how you feel when you click on a link that appears to be an interesting article only to find a wall of 2,000 words of text with no images and no header breaks. If you’re like the vast majority of people, you’ll be clicking the back button as fast as your fingers can go. So what are the lessons we can learn from this to create content that will keep users on the page and prevent them from leaving?

It’s still good to have large posts exceeding 1,000 words, especially for SEO purposes, but the way you format it is crucial. Don’t make it appear like a daunting 1,000 words, and give your readers some great information that will pull them in throughout your first paragraph. Each segment should provide value and an interesting message in and of itself, and should be able to stand alone on its own too. And no fluff – a lot of readers like to scan for the information they need or the general gist of your posts. Break up your sections by formatting information differently. Use bullet points, lists, and other creative ways to get the point across.

Speaking of creative ways for serving up some informational treats to your users, visuals, including infographics, images, informational screenshots, and videos are excellent means of creating snackable content too. But just as with the written word, your visuals should also be snackable in nature. This means instead of a 5,000 pixel length infographic, break it up into smaller pieces that won’t scare users away. You can even repurpose old content or infographics by splitting them up if the segments can stand on their own. This has the added benefit of being able to post these short mini-infographics on social media, and even encourages users to share them as well. You might also want to consider creating snackable content in the form of graphs if you provide data to your users. Once again, this follows the same methodology – keep it simple and enticing, and get your point across as quickly as possible. If you use snackable content correctly, you’ll be able to gain more users who are interested in what you have to offer while also retaining older users who love the freshly baked snackable content you whip up on a regular basis.
